What Are the Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder causes dramatic mood swings—from overly “high” and/or irritable to sad and hopeless, and then back again, often with periods of normal mood in between. Severe changes in energy and behavior go along with these changes in mood. The periods of highs and lows are called episodes of mania and depression.
Signs and symptoms of mania (or a manic episode) include:

* Increased energy, activity, and restlessness
* Excessively “high,” overly good, euphoric mood
* Extreme irritability
* Racing thoughts and talking very fast, jumping from one idea to another
* Distractibility, can’t concentrate well
* Little sleep needed
* Unrealistic beliefs in one’s abilities and powers
* Poor judgment
* Spending sprees
* A lasting period of behavior that is different from usual
* Increased sexual drive
* Abuse of drugs, particularly cocaine, alcohol, and sleeping medications
* Provocative, intrusive, or aggressive behavior
* Denial that anything is wrong

Bipolar disorder information is an area where there is a great deal of confusion. People will often say that someone is "bipolar" when they mean that they have various changes of moods. It is a phrase that is over abused and often not used properly. People may have major depression or a different diagnosis. Sometimes there are specific family dynamics which causes extreme emotional reactions which is a different situation than a diagnosis of manic-depressive disorder.It is also known as manic-depressive illness. This disorder causes unusual shifts in mood, activity levels, energy, and a person's ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. Sometimes symptoms are severe.

My question is Everyone faces such situation at time when we are stressed or when we are worried on certain things. How could we draw up to a conclusion that we are depressed only with the above criteria?

Bipolar disorder or manic-depressive disorder, also referred to as bipolar affective disorder or manic depression, is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated energy levels, cognition, and mood with or without one or more depressive episodes.
