Someone I know has been diagnosed with dementia but can it go hand in hand with bipolar? He is exhibiting extreme mood swings, paranoia and some delusional thoughts when on an 'up'. :(

Bipolar disorder and dementia have been regarded as distinct clinical entities. In contrast to unipolar depression, bipolar spectrum disorders as a rule have been neglected in the differential diagnosis of dementia. In this paper, we discuss the clinical picture of patients who present mood instability of very late onset, mimicking dementia, and sketch out a series of common clinical and neurobiological points suggesting a closer link between these disorders than previously thought.

There is some difference between Dementia and Bipolar disorder. Bipolar is a genetic disorder but on the other hand Dementia is caused due to neurodegenerative diseases. Mainly Bipolar is a behavioral disorder but Dementia is a cognitive disorder. Also dementia is more common. Psychotherapy proves to be very helpful for both the diseases.

I was also confused on the terms Dementia and Bipolar.. Both are related to the interpretation in the normal functioning of brain. Alzheimer's disease can cause Dementia. Often Confusing mood can lead to bipolar.

Sometimes called Lewy Body Disease, this type of dementia is characterized by abnormal protein deposits called Lewy bodies that develop in nerve cells in the brain stem. This disrupts the brain’s ability to function normally and impairs cognition and behavior. It can also cause tremors and is often linked with Parkinson’s Disease and dementia. It is not reversible and there is no known cure.

Dementia is a severe loss of cognitive abilities in someone earlier flawless what is expected from normal aging. It can be static, which is the result of a single global brain injury, or progressive, resulting in a prolonged slowdown due to injury or illness in the body. Although dementia is far more common in the geriatric population, it can occur at all stages of adulthood.

Initially in dementia, which begins benignly over months and years, there is memory loss for recent events such as stoves being left on, keys being misplaced, conversations forgotten. Later, people begin to get lost while driving roads that they once knew very well, and questions must be repeated because the questions and answers are quickly forgotten. Bipolar disorder and dementia are two conditions that often go hand in hand. Of course, there are many therapies that can greatly slow the process, but the outcome is inevitable. In addition, use of medicaments will help a lot, but not for very long. Sometimes, these conditions put a patient in such a state when he cannot even take care of his hygiene or eating.

Behavioral changes and psychosis are other signs of HIV dementia. Someone with the condition may seem depressed and may simply sit without seeming to respond to anything except direct questions. Other people may show signs of mania in later stages and may seem hyperactive, agitated, or unable to control their actions.
