Is this a phobia or just a figment of imagination? Phobias have more to do with deeper fear, not just some odd fear is labeled phobia. I think yours is not a phobia but just a fear.

One good thing about being afraid of the dentist is that they now have sedation dentistry. You take a pill 30 minutes before your appointment and you are out like a light. No needles no nothing. I am a nurse not a dental assistant but I do know how the sedation dentistry works from nursing newletters and such.

People with phobia often put off routine care for years or even decades.we need to avoid it, put up with gum infections, pain, or even broken and unsightly teeth.you need to visit dentist because without treatment, phobia is likely to get worse over time. That's partly because emotional stress can make dental visits more uncomfortable than they need to be.

The intensity and nature of dental anxiety varies from one individual to another. It has been suggested that the adoption of formal psychometric measures would be of benefit for accurate assessment of a patient's dental anxiety from initial contact.

Dental anxiety or fear of the dentist is a major stumbling block for many people. It usually prevents otherwise intelligent, rational people from optimizing and maintaining their dental health.

Dental anxiety is acutely accepted and it will accept a faculty of all-overs if it is time for their appointments. They will accept abstract or unfounded worries or fears. People with dental anxiety accept a high accident of gum ache and aboriginal tooth loss.

Dental abhorrence refers to the abhorrence of dentistry and of accepting dental care. A astringent anatomy of this abhorrence is abnormally alleged dental phobia, odontophobia, dentophobia, dentist phobia, or dental anxiety. However, it has been appropriate that the appellation "dental phobia" is generally a misnomer.

Dental anxiety :
People of all ages and backgrounds are affected by dental anxiety. This doesn't stop most people visiting the dentist, but others would prefer to suffer from toothache than have dental treatment.

If you don't go to the dentist, it can cause serious problems. Tooth decay and gum disease don't get better without treatment. You may not know that you have these conditions until it's too late. This could result in you losing your teeth.

Also, dentists screen patients for mouth cancer, so regular check-ups can save lives.

Teeth play an important part in physical appearance. If you have unsightly teeth or you haven't taken care of them properly, it can lead to problems with your confidence and self-esteem. Regular visits to the dentist will help you to keep a healthy, bright smile.

Taking lots of painkillers for dental problems rather than going to a dentist can have serious side-effects, and taking more than the recommended dose can even be fatal. If you're taking over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin, it's very important that you read the patient information leaflet that comes with the medicine. It's also crucial to make an appointment with a dentist as soon as possible.
Types of anxiety

Being nervous about going to the dentist affects people in different ways. Some people are anxious about specific aspects of dental treatment. Others may dislike being in close contact with someone they don't know very well. Many people had unpleasant experiences as a child and are frightened that these will be repeated.

There are also different levels of dental anxiety, ranging from slight nervousness to a severe phobia (an out-of-proportion fear that makes you avoid a certain situation).

However anxious you are, it's likely there will be ways of dealing with the problem one step at a time.

Many adults today maintain anxiety about going to the dentist, and attribute this anxiety to past uncomfortable or particularly painful dental visits they had when they were younger. They now face the prospect of their own children going to the dentist for the first time. Children going to the dentist for the first time could not have developed specific anxiety about this.
