Many people mistaken depression with sadness. We all may feel sad at times but it is short and will not last long.
But depression is diagnosed if someone feels low for at least 2 weeks with features of clinical depression like low energy, reduced interest in activities, disturbed sleep etc....

Is depression a diagnosis that can be tested? I don't know anyone that has suffered from it. With other diagnoses, the state of the patient can be proven. A test such as a blood test can be used to determine if a patient is suffering from a disease.
Is this the case with depression? Is there any way to tell if someone has depression, other than their words?

There is no test like blood test to diagnose depression.
Depression is diagnosed according to the clinical symptoms.
Criteria are low mood more or less continously for 2 weeks. Low energy , reduced interest in activities, difficulty in sleep, poor appetite, low self confidence, feeling of guilt etc... are symptoms.
The more symptoms you got, the more severe depression is , generally speaking.

If this is the case, then how is depression cured? I know that there are drugs to handle depression, both over the counter and prescription I believe, but do they really help?
I am having trouble understand the whole concept of depression - a medical diagnosis based on a patient's feelings. Compared to other areas of medicine, it seems very... inaccurate, and because of this, over diagnosed.

The most peculiar form, that you will witness are Anti-depressants. These are usually ingested orally in the form of tablets. They help calm the patient and in most cases put him/her to sleep.
Other than these, depression victims also undergo talk therapy, wherein they are asked to look at the brighter side of life and such. It's a pretty elaborate procedure.

Believe me you're not the only one. Depression is often misunderstood.
Imagine feeling suicidal all the time? Or maybe not feeling like doing anything at all? Complete lack of self-confidence? A dark feeling in your heart that YOU WILL NOT SUCCEED? Imagine feeling like crying all the time?
That my friend is depression. It is a mental disease, and like most mental diseases doesn't have a physical examination/test to have it diagnosed.

I have felt these feelings before. Most of the time it had to do with a girl, so I won't get into that. ;)
I think that I am starting to understand how it feels. I have been in such strong emotional pain before that I was completely unable to do anything. The first time that I got this, it was long and painful. As it happens to me more times (aka I keep getting dumped after long relationships where I really care about the girl), it seems to get shorter and less painful. I'm trying to remember the first time that it happened. I don't know what I would do if I was like that all the time...

Well, I've been depressed alot last year and I have to say it was one of the toughest years of my life. Eventually the depression started to cause more and more problems. I started having panic attacks, I couldn't sleep at night and so on... After a long period of 3 months I finally started to feel a bit better. I started working out, started doing well in school and that ugly feeling finally went away.

How did you know that you were depressed? Did you need any treatment?

Admin, maybe you are true. I think if what you are saying is true, then i get sad many times but not depressed. I still feel, if mild depression is one that bothers a person for few hours then i am having that too. The best way to get out of it is, i play a game or start going out to play with friends. This has been working for me.

May i ask. But when you are depressed, arn't you sad? So when you are depressed, you are most probably sad. But if you are sad, you arn't always depressed.

The ideology is quite simple. People get worried, people get sad, people get scared.
These 3 are symptoms of depression, but they necessarily do not mean that you are depressed.
You may get worried when you fail in your exams, or you may get sad when you score a low mark in your exams. You can get scared by doing something wrong or on hurting yourselves. This does not always mean that you're depressed.
There is a fine line between this and that should be made out. Prolonged worry about something (that sick sensation in your heart combined with sweat on the forehead) - Prolonged sadness - missing someone beyong limits, crying day in and day out for that person - Or even Prolonged fear of anything and everything can be termed as depression.
Here again, phobic people are often scared of many things, and though phobias are mental diseases, they necessarily donot point towards depression.

ah yes, thats what i ment to say :p You said it way clearer. Back to the subject, is there differences between depressions? At some point, a person might be so depressed, that they think about commiting suicide. Other cases people just think its there worst day ever.
So are there 2 types or deppresion?

I'm sure everybody knows the causes of deppresion, but it would nice if som1 could point out the number of deppresions there can be. Like not serious. serious and so on.

I guess that if depression isn't serious, it's only sadness and not actually depression?

Yes, check the other thread where Money=D made a loop.
Sadness doesn't directly links with depression but partially. sadness is the short term plan ( very day , hours or too mins ) but depression ever longs for year & years too. Totally a different causes.... sad doesn't affects so badly but depression leads to death....

well these two are like brother-sister.....if you are depressed then you would be sad for sure......but somehow both these problems can harm your internal body structure aswell...so don't feel depressed...just live your life with maximum quantity of happiness in your life....

Grief is a normal emotion, can make life more interesting. Many poems were inspired by art of sadness and melancholy. Almost always accompanied by sorrow of the loss. As we bid farewell to a loved one we usually feel sad. Deeper sadness is that if a relationship has ended or close relatives died. Sad but also help us appreciate the happiness. As we move towards the ultimate feeling of happiness changes from sadness, a sense of increased contrast, the mood to enjoy.

Hi, depression treatment is effective in about 80% of identified cases, when treatment is provided. Psychotherapy and medication are the two primary treatment approaches. Antidepressant medications can make psychotherapy more effective, for some people. Someone who is too depressed to talk, for instance, can't get much benefit from psychotherapy or counseling; but often, the right medication will improve symptoms so that the person can respond better.
