About 70% of people want to quit smoking but quitting smoking is not very easy. Though there are a number of Methods to quit smoking (http://www.medquit.com) , what a person needs is a strong will. There are many natural as well as artificial methods available to help a smoker to get rid of tobacco. One can choose a method suitable for oneself. A number of stop smoking medicines are also available which might need medical guidance.

To be successful in quitting smoking, one must be ready from the heart to quit smoking. One should know the consequences and dangers of smoking. He should be convinced that smoking is indeed dangerous to not only his health but also that of his near ones. Passive smoking also has many dangerous effects. He must be first mentally prepared to quit smoking. Only then will any medicine or method have any effect on his habit. Depending on the amount of cigarettes one smokes, he should bring down the quantity. Once the amount is reduced to a packet or so, some tool could be used to help further.

I quit smoking several years back chewing,dipping, stupid I know. I finally solved this way six months ago or so. I have made with sunflower seeds. Yet chewed seeds per day.

There are many proven ways to quit smoking. To boost your chances of quitting, choose more than one method. Pick what seems right for you. Each person is different. You'll know what will work best for you.

Proven quit smoking methods:

* Join a support group for people trying to quit. Research shows that people in quit-smoking support groups are more likely to quit for good. (Find out about quit smoking support groups in your area).
* Get individual counseling in person or by phone. You can get counseling in person or over the phone, through a free smoker’s quitline. Both are proven to help people quit. There are free quitlines across Canada - find out about the one in your area. If you prefer to see someone in person, ask your doctor or quitline staff to recommend a counselor. The cost of counseling may be covered by your workplace or extended health plan, if you've got one.
* Take nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). The nicotine patch, gum, lozenge or inhaler replaces some of the nicotine you usually get from cigarettes. This can make nicotine withdrawal easier to manage.
* Ask your doctor about a prescription medicine called bupropion. It’s an antidepressant that can make it easier to quit.
* Ask your doctor about a prescription medicine called varenicline tartrate. It can take away some of your craving to smoke, and make smoking less enjoyable.
* If you slip up, don’t give up. Try again, and again... keep trying until you've quit for good.
* Ask for support from your family and friends.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning about the use of some of medications that assist in quitting of smoking. An alert regarding the use of varenicline (Chantix) and buproprion (Wellbutrin or Zyban) has been issued by The FDA. It has been observed in some cases that people using these medications have had suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
You should have a discussion with your health care provider if you’re taking them. If you’ve been diagnosed with depression or any other mental illness you have to be especially careful.
