People who have bulimia routinely "binge," consuming large amounts of food in a very short period of time, and immediately "purge," ridding their bodies of the just-eaten food by self-inducing vomiting, taking enemas, or abusing laxatives or other medications. If left untreated, bulimia nervosa can lead to serious and even life-threatening problems. Those with bulimia are at risk for dangerous impulsive, self-destructive behaviors, such as sexual promiscuity, kleptomania, self-mutilation, and alcohol and/or drug abuse.

The Bulimic will purge or over eat an excessive amount of food than one would normally eat and then shortly thereafter will purge what they have just eaten. The food usually has a high caloric count and has been reported to be as high as 20,000 in one bingeing session. These large eating sessions are usually done in private, consuming comfort and sweet foods in the attempt to find a sense of control. When a feeling of accomplishment has been achieved, then the food consumed will be purged in order to be rid of the calories as well as maintain their current weight.
