Eating disorders are are multifactorial, involving both biological and psychological factors.
twin studies suggest that genetic factors may predispose and certain personality traits also have a role.
sociocultural factors are important.

Eating disorder risk factors fall into a number of categories..i would name some of the following..
1.Genetics
2.Gender
3.Age
4.Family History
5.Behavior
6.Abuse or trauma
I would most highly shift the blame on psychological factors.
Since rarely biological has any effect on how we eat. (Look at animals, they rarely have any eating disorder).

Causes of eating disorders include a number of complex, interwoven, social, psychological and biological factors.
Eating disorders often occur as a result of deeper emotional and psychological problems, whereby controlling food intake through overeating or under eating is used as a coping mechanism for feelings such as stress, anxiety, depression, sadness, anger or other difficult emotions.
Body image distortion/negative body image and low self-esteem are strongly implicated as other causes of eating disorders.

There is no single cause for eating disorders. Although concerns about weight and body shape play a role in all eating disorders, the actual cause of these disorders appear to result from many factors, including cultural and family pressures and emotional and personality disorders. Genetics and biologic factors may also play a role.
Eating disorder may occur due to various reasons. It is possible that some people have a genetic predisposition for developing eating disorders, or that eating disorders are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. It has also been suggested that dieting is a slippery slope to an eating disorder.

Anorexia and bulimia are very complicated disorders, and different people can develop eating disorders for different reasons. That is, while many individuals with eating disorders think and act in very similar ways, the reasons they have these thoughts and actions can be quite different.Although many people view these behaviors as self-destructive acts, most individuals who develop eating disorders do not usually perceive their behaviors as self-harmful. Actually, most patients feel that they began the behaviors to try to fix other problems. The most common reason therapists hear from people about why they began self-starvation, bingeing or purging is that at some point they felt terribly out of control -- whether because of something they were feeling inside themselves or something that was happening to them from their outside environment.

The approach to food in Western countries is extremely problematic. Enough food is produced in the U.S. to supply 3,800 calories every day to each man, woman, and child, far more than are needed for good nutrition. Obesity is a global epidemic, and few people living in this over-fed and sedentary culture eat a meal guiltlessly.

Eating disorders lead to self-critical, negative thoughts and feelings of weight and food, and eating habits that interfere with the normal functioning of the body and daily activities.

Complex anorexia and bulimia are very disorders, and may develop eating disorders different people for different reasons. That is, while many individuals who suffer from eating disorders think and behave in ways very similar, can be reasons to have these thoughts and actions are quite different.
Although a lot of people see these actions as acts of self-destruction, most individuals who develop eating disorders usually do not feel as self-injurious behavior. In fact, most patients feel that they began behaviors to try to solve other problems. Therapists and the most common reason why we hear of people around started to self-starvation, or the risk of too much cleansing is that at some point they felt out of control is terrible - both for what they feel within themselves or something that was happening to them outside of their environment.
