A lot of people turn to alcohol to "feel" better about themselves or something else. Many people find ifferent ways to feel btter about things. Some are illegal some are not.

Some may think that it’s just a matter of having the will to stop drinking, but alcoholism is more complicated than that. An alcoholic’s craving for alcohol is so great that it suppresses their ability to stop drinking. The majority of alcoholics need assistance to stop drinking. With treatment and support from family and friends, many have been able to stop drinking and rebuild their lives. It is a sad fact however that there are still some who are unable to stop in spite of these aids.

* Too much alcohol can destroy brain cells, possibly leading to brain damage.
* Alcohol greatly disturbs the structure and function of the central nervous system, hindering the ability to retrieve, consolidate, and process information.
* Moderate consumption of alcohol can affect cognitive abilities while large amounts interfere with the oxygen supply of the brain causing a blackout when totally drunk.
* Alcohol addiction may also inflame the mouth, esophagus, and stomach, and could cause cancer in these areas, especially in drinkers who also smoke.
* Splurge drinking may produce irregular heartbeats, and abusers experience a higher risk of high-blood pressure, heart attacks, and other heart damage.
* Alcohol also can harm vision, damage sexual function, slow circulation, be the grounds for malnutrition, and water retention.
* It can also lead to skin and pancreatic disorders, weaken the bones and muscles, thus, decreasing immunity

I heard that the lap band procedure does not cause alcoholism. Do not remove the stomach as an open RNY and does not alter the absorption of alcohol in the body. Furthermore, it is completely reversible. I hope that I would be an alternative that, when I had surgery. I know I should not live long enough to wait for that.

Alcohol addiction is simply defined as a compulsive need for an intoxicating liquid that is obtained from fermented grain or fruit. These liquids include beer, wine, and other hard liquors.

The effects of alcohol abuse on families, children, human brain and to fund state were one or two very frightening. Therefore, it is important to wait for the crisis in the early days when, until it into a monster that you can not manage again claim to be. Many addicts never thought that they prove to be addicted to alcohol or alcohol. They believe that they are often in command of their desires. Sorry to say, the reality is just the opposite of their opinion.

Alcohol alters the brain’s chemistry and increases the risk of depression. It is often associated with a range of mental health problems A recent British survey found that people suffering from anxiety or depression were twice as likely to be heavy or problem drinkers.
Extreme levels of drinking (defined as more than 30 units per day for several weeks) can occasionally cause ‘psychosis’, a severe mental illness where hallucinations and delusions of persecution develop. Psychotic symptoms can also occur when very heavy drinkers suddenly stop drinking and develop a condition known as ‘delirium tremens’.

Treatment for alcoholism does not require a highly skilled addiction specialist, but it is helpful to have a trusted health care provider who will listen to you. Seek someone you are comfortable with and whom you believe will respect your wishes. Patients often prefer to see a doctor outside of their normal caregiver. If this is the case, you may wish to consider visiting a mental health practitioner because they are often more comfortable prescribing medications to treat addiction. Whomever you see, be honest about your health situation, but understand the information--unless otherwise indicated--will be noted in your medical records.
