Hello
Many college students, faced with the ongoing war in Iraq and continued threat of terrorist attacks, find that they now feel uncertain about a future for which they had just begun to plan. Some may be concerned about parents, relatives or friends in the military or who are living overseas. Others may wonder how they, themselves, may become directly involved in this crisis. We all see and hear news images of events as they unfold around the globe. No one is unaffected.

Whether you are directly or indirectly affected, it is important to know that each person reacts differently to crisis and the ongoing anxiety and stress of war, and it is common and expected to experience a range of responses. Emotional responses can appear immediately or sometimes develop months later. Students who live away from home may have a more difficult time coping without the reassurance of having family nearby.

Understanding how you feel and taking positive steps to address those feelings can help you cope. Remember that, while things may never be quite the same again, they will get better and you will feel better.

Hello
Eating Disorders and Diet Changes

Your eating habits may change once you’re in college, and you may gain or lose weight. College cafeterias, buffets, and easy access to food 24 hours a day make it tempting to overeat or not make the healthiest food choices. On the other hand, you may not eat enough because of stress or other reasons.

Eating disorders are serious medical problems. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder are all types of eating disorders. Eating disorders frequently develop during adolescence or early adulthood, but can occur during childhood or later in adulthood. Females are more likely than males to develop an eating disorder. Eating disorders are more than just a problem with food.
Action Steps

* Determine if your eating habits could be improved. Visit a health clinic or talk to a nutritionist or dietitian about ways to improve your diet.
* If you or someone you know is showing signs of an eating disorder, get help. If you suspect a friend has an eating disorder, tell him or her about your concerns. Ask him or her to talk to a counselor or doctor who knows about eating issues, and offer to go along to the appointment. Let your friend know you are there for him or her.
* Talk to someone you can trust, such as a parent, doctor, counselor, religious leader, or teacher.

Mental health describes either a level of cognitive or emotional well-being or an absence of a mental disorder. From perspectives of the discipline of positive psychology or holism mental health may include an individual's ability to enjoy life and procure a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.Mental health is an expression of our emotions and signifies a successful adaptation to a range of demands.

With all the highs that come with University life, the occasional low is to be expected. With the combination of a high workload, living away from home for the first time and the added pressure of making new friends it can all get too much. Often it helps to talk things through with friends or family, but for many this is difficult which is why there are a number of people and services at Imperial to help you. Admitting you need help is one of the hardest things to do but you need to realize that there are hundreds of other students at Imperial who will be in the same situation.
