I'm just curious as to how you guys got out of depression. Did you go to a psychiatrist, read books, heal by itself and how do you think caused it and what you can do to prevent it.

It depends on severity of the depressive episode.
If mild depressive episode, you may improve with exercises, computerized cognitive behavioural therapy etc...
For moderate to severe depressive episode, you usually need antidepressants and/or psychotherapy (usually cognitive behavioural therapy).

Well there is no real cure for depression. It's really all about managing it. Cognitive therapy does work wonders. Personally I wouldn't recommend antidepressants because they can cause other problems.. but that's just me, and you have to decide that for yourself.
Affirmations help me a lot. There is a YouTube video I watch every morning that helps my day get off to a good start.
It's just some happy music, positive images, and words flashing across the screen like "I love my life" "I am a creative person" "I am a good money manager" and things like that. It works based in the law of attraction...which is "You receive whatever it is you perceive and believe." In other words... if you think you love your life enough, you will soon begin to REALLY love your life.
You can go to YouTube and type in things like affirmations, motivation, and increasing confidence. You will find many helpful videos there. It's worth a try.
Good Luck!

Medication is the most common treatment for depression. It is important to keep in close contact with your psychiatrist and monitor you daily mood, sleep patterns, energy, etc. so your doctor can adjust your medication as necessary.

Medication can help but always be aware of the side effects. I once took a medication for depression that made me gain over 40lbs in a short period of time. That may not be the worst thing in the world but it ended up giving me something else to be "blue" about.
So if you decide to go the route of medication keep your eyes open to any changes it may be causing in your body.
