We're hoping you will have the interest in helping us expose a serious matter of child abuse and neglect in Southern New Jersey. We are a group of parents, licensed medical professionals and mental health care workers who are willing to speak out against the injustices taking place there.
This is a psychiatric youth residential facility located in Woodbine, New Jersey. Coworkers and parents of the children-residents have witnessed the facility staff sleeping on the job, texting on their cell phones, and surfing the internet in offices rather than supervising the 9 children in the facility. Complaints to the facility manager and program coordinator have yielded no results. Neither have complaints to the manager's supervisor.
The former registered, licensed Nurse of the facility was brutally harassed into quitting. She was the victim of sexual harassment on the job and when she complained, supervisors and managers told her to "relax and learn how to take a joke".
During the periods of neglect wherein staff was sleeping, texting, and surfing the internet, there were instances where one child-resident choked another child until he turned blue, inappropriate sexual contact between the minor residents and runaways and instances of self harm.
There was a State inspection in March of 2009 at which the child-residents complained about two specific counselors at the facility. Nothing was done to correct the situation. As parents of the children-residents and former employees of this facility, we know and believe the children at this group home are not safe. The current manager has a degree in education, not psychology or social work, and we feel he is not qualified to effectively manage this place. It shows in the number of incident reports and in the number of times the New Jersey State Police and ambulances have been dispatched to the group home. Complaints to his superior and meetings called to discuss these matters have resulted in nothing.
We are outraged by the goings on at this group home. We currently have this matter before two attorneys and we have contacted NJ Abuse, Institutional Abuse, Child Behavioral Health Services in Trenton as well as Valu-Options which is the agency that regulates the referrals of the children from the hospitals to the group home. A formal complaint has been lodged with each above office. Also, we have contacted the offices of our State assemblymen.
We firmly believe that an outrage of this magnitude can benefit from public awareness. The children at this facility are not safe.
At the time of this writing, we have confirmed that a full scale investigation has been undertaken by the NJ Department of Institutional Abuse. Please help us make the public aware.
Any additional suggestions or ideas on whom to contact to rectify these matters are greatly welcome. We have already contacted state and local television news stations and newspapers.
Please help if you can. Details can be found at our blog:
