I am not 100% sure so don't hold me to my word, but I think dementia is when your start slowly losing your abillity to function. So like for example you start losing the feeling in your arms or legs so they can't function properly anymore and things like that. It also applies to the brain, organs and so on.

As we grow older, we lost brain cells but for people with dementia, loss of brain cells happen much quicker and as a result , they got memory difficults (forgetting things easily) , difficulties in planning, and there is some emotional changes (more easily irritable etc...) . In later stages, they even struggle to remember how to do daily routines such as combing, putting buttons on etc...

It is progressive condition and it is estimated around 5 per cent will be affected in the population of people who are older than 65.

If you've watched the harry potter series, you must've noticed the DEMENTORS. They sucked out your life, your emotions, your happiness and your thoughts. They leave you in a NULL world.

That is what was in the movie, but that is exactly what happens with Dementia in real people.

The user - admin above gave a nice explanation to the topic, I'll tell you what happens with people suffering from Dementia.

Imagine John Doe is a guy who suffers from Dementia, the poor soul will actually talk things twice in between conversation. For example, he may say something, then kind of switch off and say the same thing again. He won't be the same John Doe people knew as, he would turn into a complete different personality. He won't be able to understand what's going on - on the TV. He'll find himself incapable of doing simple tasks like brushing his teeth and in many cases, even Writing. He'll grow irritable and frustrated. He begins losing confidence.

These, my friend are just some of the many symptoms of Dementia.

ahh! now i understand! thanks to both of you :)
So that is why it is more vulnerable to old people, since they already have a bit of there lives sucked out.

Yes, the posts by Admin and Shiru gave a detail account of what it is, actually. However, i can add a bit, it is a bit like losing control of your senses and repeating the same thing.

Dementia is the loss of mental abilities such as thinking, remembering, and reasoning. It is not a disease, but a group of symptoms that may accompany some diseases or conditions affecting the brain.

There are many different types of dementia, each with their own causes. The most common dementia symptoms include loss of memory, confusion, and changes in personality, mood and behaviour.

Dementia is the progressive loss of functions of the brain. It occurs as a result of physical changes in the structure of the brain. These changes affect memory, thinking, behaviour and emotion. As it is a progressive disease, the symptoms will gradually get worse and it will affect you more and more.
