Hey all --

I just read this incredible new memoir of depression and OCD called "Year of the Cock," and I thought I'd post about it here because I think it could be of benefit to the community. There's really nothing like it out there -- such a brutally honest and revealing tale of a man's struggle with a strange obsession that hits him like an anvil and capsizes his life.

You can check it out in greater detail here -- and even read some of it --

-- but the basic story is this guy, Alan Wieder, a very successful reality tv producer, decides to leave his wife after a 2-year period of marital trouble. At first single life for Alan is grand... he buys a Porsche, gets a bachelor pad, hooks up with women... but soon afterward, he develops a strange obsession with the size of his (perfectly normal) penis. He believes -- can't shake the belief -- that his penis is horrifically, shamefully tiny, and not only that, "shrinking into oblivion." His self-punishing obsession gets so severe that he falls into a terrible depression, and it eventually spreads to other parts of his body: his hands, his hair, his heart, you name it. He comes to view his entire body -- every part of it -- as defective and wrong.

I've read quite a few memoirs... but never have I encountered one more honest and heartbreaking than YEAR OF THE COCK. For a man to bare his soul this way is so utterly rare. As an OCD sufferer myself, I was so moved by his story and took tremendous courage from it. It's an INCREDIBLE account of a man's shame, self-hate, despair, twisted illogical thinking, obsession... and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it to everyone here -- especially because Alan (I heard him on "The Jay Thomas Show" on the radio) is a much happier man today, partly for having written this cathartic book. Check it out!!! It's awesome!!!
